Influence and Argument

Key Framework Objectives

  • R10 Analyse the overall structure of a text to identify how key ideas are developed e.g. through the organisation of the content and the patterns of language used.
  • S2 explore the impact of a variety of sentence structures
  • S3 to make good use of the full range of punctuation including colons and semi-colons.
  • WR14 Develop and signpost arguments in ways that make the logic clear to the reader
  • S&L7 Listen for a specific purpose, paying sustained attention and selecting for comment or question that which is relevant to the agreed focus.

  • Deduce, infer or interpret information.
  • Identify and comment on the structure and organisation of texts.
  • Organise and present whole texts effectively.
  • Construct paragraphs and use some cohesion within paragraphs.
  • Vary sentences for clarity, purpose and effect.

Learning Outcomes - All students should be able to:

  • understand body language can influence an audience
  • identify key images and words used to influence the reader
  • identify the use of some rhetorical devices e.g. ‘you’, lists of three
  • write a persuasive text employing a range of rhetorical devices

Homework areas for this unit will include the following:

  • weekly spelling/vocabulary test
  • recognising and using adjectives
  • basic commas
  • rules of speech punctuation
  • reading for understanding
  • explore a range of ‘hooking’ techniques used in a story opening
  • comment on specific techniques used in a given short story
