Creating Structure

Key Framework Objectives

  • W1 review, consolidate and secure the spelling conventions covered in Year 7.
  • S6 Explore and compare different methods of grouping sentences into paragraphs of continuous text that are clearly focused.
  • R2 Undertake independent research using a range of reading strategies...knowledge of how texts and ICT databases are organised and acknowledging sources.
  • R10 analyse the overall structure of a text to identify how key ideas are developed e.g. through the organisation of the content and the pattern of the language used.
  • WR2 Re-read work to anticipate the effect on the reader and revise style and structure, as well as accuracy, with this in mind.
  • WR11 Explain complex ideas and information clearly e.g. defining principles, explaining a scientific process, an information leaflet.

  • AF3 Deduce, infer or interpret information
  • AF6 identify and comment on writers’ purposes and viewpoints and the overall effect of the text on the reader
  • AF2 Produce texts which are appropriate to task, reader and purpose.
  • AF3 Organise and present whole texts effectively.
  • AF4 Construct paragraphs and use some cohesion within…paragraphs.

Learning Outcomes - All students should be able to:

  • recognise that texts are organised and presented in different ways
  • identify a range of presentational devices within a text e.g. font, colour, images
  • list some of the conventions of a formal letter
  • use a range of connectives to link sentences for greater fluency and coherence
  • explore strategies used to make notes effectively

  • rules of speech punctuation
  • reading for understanding
  • explore a range of ‘hooking’ techniques used in a story opening
  • comment on specific techniques used in a given short story
