The Geography department, at Trinity Church of England High School, consists of three full-time staff. We aim to teach Geography in an appropriate, and relevant, way to encourage the young people of Trinity to think, and learn, about the world around them.
At key stage3 pupils study three periods of Geography per fortnight. Each year (7,8 and 9) covers a range of Human, Physical and Environmental Geography and also includes all the major Geographical skills including map work, data gathering and enquiry presentation. For a full description of the course materials, please follow the KS3 links above. Here you will find further information on course details, key words and useful links.
Almost every unit of work contains a piece of work which will be marked to generate current National Curriculum grade for each student. This data is used to formulate current grades.
At the end of year 9 students will have the opportunity to continue their studies of Geography into GCSE level by opting for the Geography course. If chosen, at key stage 4, students will study four periods per fortnight. The school sits the AQA exam, syllabus A. Click here for more information. Currently 25% of the final GCSE grade is determined by coursework. Pupils will study and prepare for this coursework throughout the summer term of year 10, and will work on it's completion over the summer holidays and into year 11. Fieldwork is an important part of Geography, and we recognise the value it adds to the Geography department. With this in mind there are three major fieldwork experiences for Trinity pupils. Firstly, all year 8 pupils will travel to Daisy Nook Park, near Oldham, to study the River Medlock. For more information and images click here.
Next, GCSE pupils will conduct fieldwork as part of their coursework in year 10. This takes place along Oxford Road in Manchester. You can visit the coursework page for more information.
Finally, all GCSE pupils will spend a day in Malham in North Yorkshire studying the famous Limestone Scenery as part of the unit covering Rocks and Landscapes. The day is spent walking, sketching and waterfall climbing!! Click here for more information.
Pupils in KS3 and KS4 will receive one Geography homework per week. This may vary to fit in with course requirements. As pupils move up through the school, more time will be required to successively complete homework. Also, as pupils mature homework will turn to a more analytical style. Access to the internet is useful, though not necessary. It is acceptable for pupils to complete some homeworks on the computer, pupils may ask their teacher to which homeworks this applies.
