Self, Family and Friends

Time allocation – 3 weeks

  • Exchange information about self, family, friends and pets.
  • Give name, age, birthday, nationality.
  • Discuss likes and dislikes.
  • Describe physical appearance.
  • Give information about parents’ jobs.
  • Spell name, street name, town.
  • Greet someone and respond to greetings.
  • Ask and respond to “how are you?”
  • Make and understand introductions.
  • Welcome a visitor.
  • Thank someone for hospitality.
  • Exchange information about gender and marital status.
  • Express opinions and feelings about members of the family.

Grammar

  • Nouns
  • Articles
  • Adjectives – agreement, position, possessives.
  • Avoir and Etre – full present tense.
  • ER verbs – present tense.
  • All personal pronouns (including “on”)
  • Modes of address.
  • Negatives.
  • Numbers and dates.

Interests and Hobbies

Time allocation – 4 weeks

  • Describe how you spend free time in the evenings and at weekends.
  • Exchange information about hobbies and interests – when, where, how often, with whom.
  • Give opinions on activities and support with reasons.
  • State preferences.
  • Understand and respond to an opinion to participate.

Grammar

  • Infinitives
  • Aller and Faire – present tense.
  • Present tense – je, il, elle, on, nous forms of all verbs.
  • Depuis and the present tense.
  • Perfect tense – je, il, elle, on, nous forms of common verbs.
  • Imperfect tense – il y avait , c’était.
  • Imperfect tense – je, il, elle, on, nous forms of common verbs.
  • Conditional tense – Je voudrais, j’aimerais.

Higher Level – all of the above and:

  • All parts of the verb in perfect and imperfect tenses.
  • Direct object pronouns.

Home and Local Environment

Time allocation – 3 weeks

  • Give address.
  • Give information about house/flat – location, number of rooms, colour, size, contents, outside.
  • Describe bedroom – furniture, own or shared.
  • Give information about travel routes into town and length of journey.
  • Describe your area/region – location, character, amenities, interest.
  • Ask someone about their area.
  • Compare home country and French speaking country – towns, regions, climate, geographical features.
  • Give opinions about where you and others live.
  • Discuss advantages/disadvantages of local environment.

Grammar

  • Revise and consolidate from previous units.
  • Comparatives and superlatives.
  • Prepositions.

Higher Level

  • As above but include meilleur and pire.

Daily Routine

Time Allocation – 3 weeks

  • Give details about daily routine on weekdays and at weekends.
  • Exchange information and opinions about meals at home and at school.

Grammar

  • Revise and consolidate relevant points from previous units.
  • Reflexive verbs in the present tense – je, il, elle, on, nous forms.
  • The time (conversational and 24 hour clock)

Higher Level

  • As above – but all parts of the reflexive verb.
  • Reflexive verbs in the perfect and imperfect tenses.

School and Future Plans (up to age 18)

Time allocation – 4 weeks

  • Understand instructions in the classroom.
  • Make requests in the classroom.
  • Give details about school routine – times, number of lessons etc.
  • Describe travel to and from school.
  • Discuss extra-curricular activities.
  • Give information about school subjects (including likes, dislikes preferences and reasons), timetables, length of terms and holidays.
  • Discuss future plans for the coming months.

Grammar

  • Imperatives.
  • Interrogatives.
  • Immediate future (with Aller)

Higher Level

  • As above.
  • Future tense of regular verbs.
  • Future tense of Aller, Avoir, Etre, Faire.
