Theme 3 – Work and Lifestyle



Travel, Transport and Finding the Way

Time allocation – 3 weeks

  • Attract the attention of a passerby.
  • Exchange information about the location of a place.
  • Exchange information about the location of bus stops, platforms, toilets etc.
  • Understand signs, notices and announcements in the street, shops etc.
  • Obtain information from maps, street plans and timetables.
  • Buy tickets, books of tickets.
  • Specify destination, single/return, class, date.
  • Exchange information about a journey – transport, directions, times of departure and arrival, cost, travel conditions, problems etc.

Grammar

  • Revise relevant grammar from previous units.
  • Adverbs of time and place (aujourd’hui, demain, ici, là-bas)
  • Common adverbial phrases.

Higher Level

  • As above.
  • Pluperfect tense.

  • Exchange information re availability, length of stay, dates, requirements, cost, acceptability, mealtimes, rules and regulations.
  • Make and understand complaints.

Grammar

  • Revise relevant points from previous units – prepositions, interrogatives.
  • Negatives in the imperfect tense – ce n’était pas, il n’y avait pas

Higher Level

  • As above.
  • Negatives in the perfect tense.
  • Formal letter writing.

Holiday Activities

Time Allocation – 3 weeks

  • Accept and decline offers of food and drink.
  • Understand signs and announcements in cafés and restaurants.
  • Understand and give opinions about food, drink, restaurants.
  • Reserve a table, order a meal and pay for it.
  • Make a complaint in a restaurant.
  • Exchange information and opinions about holiday activities and interests.
  • Discuss tourist attractions and entertainment.

Grammar

  • Use of perfect and imperfect tenses to describe a holiday (je, il, elle, on, nous forms of the verb.

Higher Level

  • Thorough revision of all tenses – present, perfect, imperfect, pluperfect, future, conditional.

Time allocation – 4 weeks

  • Ask about and understand postal services – letters, faxes, email, phone calls.
  • Ask about and understand changing money at a bank.
  • Exchange information about hiring bikes, boats, sleeping bags etc.
  • Report a loss or theft, describing the object – size, shape, colour, material, contents.
  • Say where and when the object was lost.
  • Ask about and understand how someone feels – ill, well, better, hot, cold, tired etc.
  • Exchange information about consulting a doctor, dentist, chemist.
  • Discuss common ailments and treatment.
  • Exchange information about location and details of a accident, calling the emergency services.
