YEAR 9 UNIT 1 – MUSICAL STRUCTURES

TIMESCALE: 14 - 15 Lessons (September - December)

Classwork to be covered:

  • Ground Bass – Performance of “Time Lapse” by Michael Nyman
  • Listening based activities on this piece and others in the style
  • Instrumental skills, reading of notation
  • Study of popular song forms/styles from 1960 – present day

Homework

  • Research and presentation of a given decade of pop music – paired or individual work

Work to be assessed:

  • Ensemble and solo performance skills
  • Presentations. Marks for quality of information, presentation skills, effort and use of ICT. Overall grade A – E, comment based feedback.

YEAR 9 UNIT 2 – MUSICAL ARRANGEMENTS

TIMESCALE: 12 – 14 Lessons (January – Easter/beyond)

Classwork to be covered:

  • Listening work – making comparisons between different versions/covers of pop songs.
  • Ensemble performance of such songs e.g. “Ain’t no Sunshine”, “Sway”, “Mambo No. 5”
  • Improvisation where appropriate
  • Listening to orchestral music from the Romantic era.
  • Music and the Media – activities using “Sound2Game” software.
  • Creating an original radio advertisement

Homework

  • Research a composer from the Romantic era.

WORK TO BE ASSESSED:

  • Ensemble and solo performance skills
  • End of KS3 Music Examination (theory, vocabulary and listening skills)
