At Key Stage 4 the Product Design course provides students with the opportunity to learn for how products are designed and manufactured. The students will learn the importance of product design in today’s society.
They will acquire the skills to design their own products using many techniques including computer-aided design (CAD). Workshop based learning will give students the opportunity to manufacture their own products. They will develop their workshop skills using a variety of materials and manufacturing processes including computer aided manufacture (CAM).
In year 10 students are given a variety of exciting modules where they design and make prototypes of actual products and consider how these products could be produced in large quantities. They also learn how to design in the style of famous designers. There is opportunity for both independent work and teamwork during the year.
In year 11 students focus on their coursework project where they design and manufacture a product of their choice for a particular client and target market.
The examination board followed is AQA. The final assessment consists of two parts:
Major Project Undertaken - 60% of the final mark
Terminal Examination - 40% of the final mark
Homework is set on a weekly basis and invloves students working on their coursework.
