EDEXCEL GCSE RS                      RELIGION AND LIFE

UNIT TITLE: RELIGION, WEALTH AND POVERTY

AIM:    To consider the key issues relating to wealth and poverty as outlined in the syllabus. This section is based on a study of Christianity and Islam.

KEY ISSUES AS OUTLINED IN THE SYLLABUS:

  • Christian and Muslim teachings on: possession; uses and dangers of wealth; stewardship; almsgiving and charity; compassion and justice; the relationship between rich and poor.

  • The need for world development in response to the causes, extent and effects of poverty in the world.

  • The work of religious agencies such as Christian Aid, Muslim Aid in world development and relief of poverty. (Detailed knowledge of ONE religious agency and the reasons for its work.)

  • The relationship of religion to wealth and poverty.

TECHNICAL TERMS:

Moral Responsibility - having a duty to other people which you do not have to do by law.

Development - changes which improve people's lives.

LDC - Less Developed Countries, the poorest countries in the world.

Rehabilitation - bringing people like drug addicts back to normal life.

Appropriate Technology - machinery which an be used and maintained by people living in LDCs.
