At Key Stage 3 we offer a general science course based on the resource "Exploring Science" but also incorporating many other exciting and innovative resources. This course allows the students to explore a wide range of skills and knowledge which will provide them with a good understanding of science. We achieve very good results in our Key Stage 3 SAT examinations which provides a solid foundation for their studies at Key Stage 4.
At Key Stage 4 we offer a suite of GCSE courses called "21st Century Science", which have been developed in collaboration with York University, the Nuffield Foundation and OCR. In year 10 students all follow the core GCSE Science course which leads to the award of one GCSE grade. In year 11 students either follow GCSE Additional Science which is ideally suited for preparation for A level science courses or GCSE Additional Applied Science which is a skills based, work related course. In all of these course, students can achieve any GCSE grade up to A* level. In addition, we also offer GCSE courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics called "Triple Science".
In science we try to develop students interests in science. We offer an extracurricular 'Science Club' which is popular with younger pupils. We also arrange visits to lectures, visiting speakers and have an annual "Science Week" which involves the whole school. Our rooms are always a very popular attraction during open evening. All our rooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards and staff use an exciting range of multimedia tools to make lessons attractive and exciting.
The Science curriculum is available online via our E-learning site. All pupils are instructed on how to access the site and find relevant resources. When ever a student is off ill, then they will be able to find work to catch up online.
Homework is set according to the students timetables. In all years we set a range of tasks which might include, research, level assessed tasks, multimedia presentations, comprehension, etc. In upper school, homework is increasingly being set online using E-Learning. Students are directed to the appropriate webpages during the lesson and are expected to complete tasks either at home or at homework club.
