8G - Rocks and Weathering

effect of acid rain

Use the table below to help you study this unit.

The links on the right will take you to websites that will help.

Level 3

I know that there are different sorts of rocks and can describe basic properties from observations.  Know rocks have been around for a long time.

Level 4

I know that rocks have different names e.g. igneous, sedimentary.  Rocks are weathered – be able to describe its effects.

Level 5

I can describe rock specimens in terms of texture and relate this to properties such as porosity.

I can describe and explain the processes by which layers of sediments are produced.

I know that rain can be acidic and this weathers rock.

I know that water expands when frozen and understands that this causes weathering.

I know how Sedimentary rocks are formed and the time scale involved.

Level 6

I can describe rock specimens and recognise that different rocks have different textures;

I can describe some effects of weathering and recognise sedimentary layers.

I can describe chemical processes involved – word equation for acid + carbonate.

Rocks Match Up

Level 7

I can relate processes of chemical weathering to the reactions of particular grains with acids;

I can relate sedimentary layers to the processes by which they were produced.

I can describe chemical processes involved - use symbol equations for acid + carbonate.
