What You will Learn:  Year 7  |  Year 8


Art

The following points are covered in Art:

  • Create a relief sculpture from found objects based on the work of American artist Louise Nevelson.
  • Create an illuminated letter based on the work of medieval manuscripts and other relevant works of art.

Assessment:

Students work is photographed and formally assessed using National Curriculum criteria and National Curriculum levels.

Design & Technology

The following points are covered in Design Technology:

  • All students will continue to focus on the following areas: Planning for making, students will look at the type of materials that are used to make household items i.e. ipods, MP3 players.
  • Quality and accuracy of final prototype.

Assessment:

Diagrammatical evidence in Student Log Book is assessed by the teacher. Students will be given an End of Key Stage 3 level of attainment based on Teacher Assessment from the 6 areas of study in the academic year.

Drama

The following area is covered in Drama:

  • Students are either, reading “The 4th Year Are Animals” by Richard Tulloch and looking at the process of directing and developing
    performance from text, or exploring issues and skills to do with decision making, parenting and growing up, using improvisation and forum
    theatre.

Assessment:

Assessment take the form of ongoing observation by the teacher.

English

The following points are covered in English:

  • Study the set Shakespeare scenes from Much Ado About Nothing or Richard III focusing on: Language, Themes and Ideas, Character and Motivation, Plays in performance.
  • Practice writing for a purpose for a specific audience and in a given form.

Assessment:

This is assessed by Mock SATs Shakespeare examination comparing an aspect of the two set scenes of the play.

Enquiry Skills

The following points are covered in Enquiry Skills:

  • Be able to use a spreadsheet as a model, using complex formula and functions to predict changes as a result of changing variables.
  • To be able to use video editing software to create and edit a short film.

Assessment:

Students are awarded a National curriculum ICT level as part of the “You are what you eat” and “Bullying” projects.

Geography

The following points are covered in Geography:

  • What is the plate tectonic theory?
  • What are the causes, effects and human responses to earthquakes and volcanoes?
  • What are the components of an ecosystem?

Assessment:

These are assessed in the following ways: Plate boundary worksheet – graded homework, National Curriculum assessment – a newspaper report on an earthquake or volcano and by completing a 'Components of an Ecosystem' worksheet that is graded.

History

The following points are covered in History:

  • (A) Peterloo - different interpretations of the events of the day.
  • (B) The Middle Passage – knowledge and understanding.
    Assessment: (A) Several pieces of evidence are examined and students decide which are reliable/useful. (B) Students complete fact sheets on aspects of the Middle Passage.

  • (A) Match Girls Strike – knowledge and understanding.
  • (B) Life on the Plantation – use of evidence.
    Assessment
    : (A) Students to work in groups to produce information on how such strikes were organised. (B) Students to look at evidence and produce a structured piece of work.
  • (A) The Suffragettes – what can we learn from evidence.
  • (B) Slavery Today – knowledge and understanding
    Assessment: (A) Derby day 1913: Using evidence available, students to come to a conclusion. (B) Students to present a detailed study of how / where slavery exists today.
  • Why did World War I break out?
    Assessment
    : Students complete an extended answer exercise.

Languages

The following points are covered in Languages:

Topics include: Food & Drink, Life in the Foreign Country, The Family

  • Strategies for reading comprehension.
  • Use a variety of tenses – present, past and future in written work.

Assessment:

Assessment is in the form of Reading and Written Tasks.

Mathematics

The following points are covered in Mathematics:
Set 1 & 2

  • Shape and Shape: Apply Trigonometry
  • Handling Data: Select, construct, modify and interpret suitable graphical representations.
  • Algebra: Plot the graphs of similar quadratic and cubic functions.
  • Handling Data: Construct and interpret pie charts.

Set 3 & 4

  • Algebra: Recognise that equations of the form Y=MX + C correspond to straight line graphs. Plot the graph of linear functions.
  • Handling Data: Know that the sum of probabilities is 1 and use this when solving equations.

Set 5

  • Handling Data: Construct and interpret stem and leaf diagrams.
  • Shape and Space: Identify and use Angle, side and Symmetry properties of triangles and quadrilaterals.

Assessment:

Students knowledge of the above points is tested through End-of-Unit tests and practice SATs questions linked to National Curriculum Levels.

Music

The following points are covered in Music:

  • Students will learn how music can be used to help advertise a product.
  • Students will develop their musical performance skills on an instrument of their choice.

Assessment:

These are assessed in the following ways: Production/performance of an original radio advertisement and assessed class performance of a variety of pieces.

Physical Education

The following points are covered in Physical Education:

  • Develop more independence in planning activities using evaluation to improve performances.
  • Begin to develop sports leadership skills in all activities (preparation for SL1 NVQ).
  • Access and participate in Inter-Form Competitions

Assessment:

These are assessed by teacher levelling using Department Scheme of Work and QCA core tasks (photographic evidence for final report) and student participation in Inter-form competitions.

The following points are covered in Religious Education:

  • To understand the different approaches used by Martin Luther King and Malcolm X  to the issues of racism.

Assessment:

Students should participate in lessons and will complete an assessment task at the end of the unit.
